Interior Secretary in First for Native American

WASHINGTON—The Senate confirmed Rep. Deb Haaland as President Biden’s interior secretary Monday, in a vote that for the first time will make a Native American a White House cabinet secretary.

The Senate voted to confirm Ms. Haaland (D., N.M.) on an 51-40 vote. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska) broke ranks with other Republicans to cast her vote in favor of Ms. Haaland, after saying that her support came in large part for the historic opportunity to have a Native American cabinet secretary.
