Sheriff: Cross-deputization of tribal police should help repair trust

In the late 1980s, a then-Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputy named Kevin Christie stood trial two times on charges related to molesting a 13-year-old Hupa girl.

Those trials ended with “the first resulting in a mistrial, the second a conviction and when the conviction was overturned and the case was sent to trial again, the case was dropped because the survivors could not withstand the mental health impacts of testifying for a third time,” according to a new report on missing and murdered Indigenous women in Northern California by the Sovereign Bodies Institute and the Yurok Tribe.
